i looooooved this book. i pretty much flew through reading this. the cover on the photo is of the edition that i read which was published in 2007 in estonia, in estonian.
this is the story of cait mccann who goes through a ton of things throughout this whole book.
first off, her family is pretty much fucked up. her father is an alcoholic and he's been depressed ever since her mother died. on top of that, he's not a very successful writer. cait's brother dominic is a narcissistic asshole who hangs out with the wrong crowd.
cait's first encounter with lucas is on the way home from town and lucas is strolling on the sidewalk to the island they live on. everybody in this island is pretty much closed off and don't want anyone new on their island, and all shit goes down.
cait goes to the beach and gets almost molested by one of the big-headed assholes on the island - jamie tait. he thinks of himself highly because he's the son of a high person of some sort (governer? can't remember soz). then there's angel dean who just fucks shit up just for the fun of it.
the whole island turns on the "gypsy", the "hobo", the "thief" and whatnot everybody calls lucas. the only person who really genuinely wants to get to know him and protects him of some sort, is cait. at a regatta (is that a word idk) a girl is drowning in the sea and no one goes to help her but then out of pretty much nowhere, lucas gets in the water and saves the girl. then he gets called out for wanting to rape the little girl and nobody believes cait and her dad when they'd actually seen what had happened. everybody just wants lucas out.
and all hell goes loose.
i was so pissed off at most of the characters in this book, the people who were too far up in each others' asses that all they cared about was their stupid fucking island. they even tried to freeze out the mccanns because they weren't born on the island, at least cait's father, since he's irish. the fuck?????
i can't deal with arrogant people and that's what this book was absolutely full of. full of shit.
this is what makes this book so important and so good for me. i felt really emotional whilst reading it and at times i wanted to rip the book to pieces.
i guess there should be a slight trigger warning to people who want a summer contemporary, light and fluffy, 'cause that's definitely what this book is not about. it's heartbreaking and cruel. there are scenes that are super fucked up and they all lead to the one and only shithead in the book, already introduced in the first chapter.
this is an easy five out of five stars book and i plan to get myself a copy as well because it was probably my second time reading it because i can't put my finger on it if i've read it before or not even though a lot of it was familiar. probably i've read it before but it was absolute years ago. really good. i borrowed this from the library.
until next time
