117 - the fanfiction tag

hey hey! today i thought i would do a tag post that was just posted on youtube by jen campbell, and collaborated with rowan ellis. they also did a discussion about pretty much everything about fanfiction, for example, who writes it, why is it written, fetishes etc. which i find really interesting.

a lot of the points in the videos are about harry potter fanfics but i wanted to take this on a bit of a different thing - real people fanfiction which is on the most part what i read.

the fanfiction tag video / jen campbell
let's talk about fanfiction / rowan ellis

1 - do you read or write fanfiction and why?

i obviously do read fan fiction a lot because a lot of the posts i make include fanfics that i read and briefly say things about them and what i liked and didn't like about them on this blog. the most i read one direction or 5 seconds of summer fan fiction because it gives you a feeling of knowing them and, well, it's just that it's fun to read fan fiction, really.
i do still write fan fiction because it's really a way to express my ideas on paper and lately i've had quite a few dreams that i've made into little bits of fan fiction stories. i was twelve when i wrote my first fanfic and it was about the same as 'twilight' because i didn't know how to write properly, so lol. the latest i probably wrote a thing was most definitely just a couple of weeks ago, i've just not posted it anywhere.

2 - how and when did you discover fanfiction? How old were you?

i discovered fan fiction when i was probably around twelve. and back then until i was about fifteen, i read only bits and pieces that were being written and posted on a website called rate.ee, which really was the two thousand and four facebook for estonians. at the most it was sort of a dating site as well, but people just chatted to their friends on there and posted photos and things like that. also, fan fiction on rate became a thing about in two thousand and eight or nine when justin bieber became a big thing. i was a fan of justin and read some of his fan fiction i found on there.

3 - how has fandom and fiction evolved since you found it?

i think it's become such a huge community since i discovered it. especially now that there are sites like fanfiction.net, wattpad.com, radish fiction and tumblr. i've read some on each of them but the most i myself read on wattpad. i used to read on fanfiction.net but that was a while ago. some fan fiction has gotten so huge and they're being turned into physical books which i think is great, really. and as for the things called 'imagines' where you imagine yourself with a celebrity, are big as well. one of the biggest writers of fan fiction who got published is anna todd and she has over a billion views on her books on wattpad, which i think is pretty insane.

4 - do you still engage with it in the way you used to?

i'd say so because i do read fan fiction quite frequently still but i've just been slowly trying to get out of the fanfiction because ashton irwin made a great point on a bbc radio 1 interview about the band members (real life) being used in fan fiction and imagines, and how people imagine them to be instead of them in real life. but i've never been an active commenter or talker in the community, i just read and do a tiny review, really.

5 - which fandoms do you enjoy reading/writing? (Harry Potter etc)

i read one direction and 5 seconds of summer fanfiction. i've read a couple of others from like justin bieber (when i was fourteen) and oli sykes, as well as andy biersack and vic fuentes, some people from youtube etc. but now i'm mainly reading 1d and 5sos members' au-s. i don't think i've ever read a harry potter fanfic... oops... i've not even finished the entire series yet. chill out, i will complete my reading this summer, ok. i will.

6 - who are your otp-s? (one true pairings)

funnily enough, i never read fanfiction that has two of the band members be gay and be a couple. i'm not really into reading fanfiction with gay main characters and love interests but i've only read possibly two - one of them being the milk fic (out of plain curiosity) which i despised and some similar ones about dan and phil. i ship the main character and the celebrity really, usually, with the characters being straight and not a celebrity (or is a celebrity but doesn't exist in real life).

7 - have you told anyone that you write fanfiction?

my family and close friends know i do write fanfiction. my family doesn't care and my friends don't really wither, i just tell them to vote for the stories' chapters when i upload a new one. so yeah.

8 - what does fanfiction mean to you?

i think that it's just a way to express yourself in a storytelling way. you just get an idea and write it down. i've learned a lot from some fanfics because some people do their research very well. and to me it's a fun way to even learn a language better (if the writer's good at writing themselves).

9 - do you prefer canon-based fanfiction or au? (so fanfiction that slots seamlessly into the original story or ‘alternate universe’ fanfiction where the world is slightly different)

i'm definitely more of an au reader and writer, especially since i've written fanfics about either one direction or 5 seconds of summer in the most recent times. i don't know the people in either bands in the very least so it's a fun way to imagine how they'd be in a story. i really like au-s where the celebrity character is a ruler of some sort or is in a gang. i dig it so much. but i do read some canon-based ones like with life on tour and such, and i've tried writing it as well.

10 - tell us about a fanfiction you’ve either read or written

here's a whole list of my favorite ever stories (mixed with some original stories, not fanfiction) on wattpad.
the latest little thing i wrote was about michael (from 5sos) who talks to a fan via twitter direct messages and they pretty much talk about funko pops because the girl collects them. that's basically all i have right now, and it's like two pages of them going back and forth with their dm's. i've not published it and i don't think i will either. as much as i enjoy reading fan fiction with either texting, dm'ing, tweets, chat messages, i'm just not good at writing them at all.
besides that i'm writing a dystopian au, a sequel to one of my previous stories, a few other ones of just random scenes, and editing a bunch. also i'm translating one story from a super popular wattpad author.

so there you have it! this is 'the fanfiction tag' and i really enjoyed doing this! i am a huge supporter of fan fiction and i agree with a lot of the points both jen and rowan made in their videos, so make sure to check them out both on youtube!

today's song choice is cold collective's 'feel out'.

until next time
