96 - too late (non-spoiler review)

synopsis:

Sloan will go through hell and back for her little brother. And she does, every single night.

Forced to remain in a relationship with the dangerous and corrupt Asa Jackson, Sloan will do whatever it takes to make sure her brother has what he needs.

Nothing will get in her way.

Nothing except Carter.

Sloan is the only good thing to ever happen to Asa. He knows this and he never plans on letting her go; even if she doesn't approve of his lifestyle. But despite Sloan's disapproval, Asa knows what it takes to get what he wants. He knows what he needs to do to remain on top.

Nothing will get in his way.

Nothing except Carter.

so this was a story that colleen wrote to only be published on wattpad but i hope it gets published irl because i love everything colleen writes, man. i want to own every book she ever writes tbh.

first off, it's for very mature audiences because it contains domestic abuse, drug abuse, explicit language and everything else i can't name from the top of my head.

this story was really intense towards the end especially, it was again quite soul-crushing and i had my favorite characters, my least favorite characters et cetera. i absolutely loathed asa, he was just plain awful.

i love how colleen deals with situations like this one in her books, i love how she doesn't make a topic like this sugary, because that's how it probably is. sure, i get it, asa's a troubled kid but i found myself sympathizing for him just as sloan and carter did. and i completely understand why sloan had to do what she had to do, and i really liked how carter wasn't straight up the superhero.

at the same time, i'm sort of getting tired of the instalove between characters. sure, carter and sloan have three thousand things to go through but they love each other basically straight when sloan opens her mouth and talks to carter. that's a little ridiculous but this time i didn't really mind.

this book obviously got a five-star rating from me because i love how loose ends come together and that's mostly what colleen does, and that's what i guess what makes her such a great author. on wattpad, there's usually so many writers that i've read that don't end their stories properly, there will be so so many loose ends that i can't stop wondering where the story would go when it's not getting a sequel.

this was in no means an easy read solely because of the topics in this book. i haven't experienced any of the things that occurred in this book but i felt for the characters so much and i couldn't put it down.

some scenes in this book - okay, well, sex scenes - are way more graphic than in any of her other books, and it's violent, it's ugly. to read it from asa's point of view, i just felt so shit for sloan.

colleen remains as one of my all-time favorite authors, there's no question in that. can't wait to read her next release 'it ends with us' in august!
