hey hey hey!
so i decided to break up the uk trip into four separate posts. so, this one is from the eighteenth of august to the twenty first of august which is while i was in manchester and sledmere.
so!
what the hell was i even taking part of?
i took part in a project called „festival 15“ which is an economy-friendly festival project in the united kingdom for european citizens inbetween ages 18-30. this project involves two festivals where the volunteers (european citizens, obviously) help out and also enjoy the activites taking part in both festivals. the festivals that are in this project are tribfest and leeds festival, both taking place in yorkshire. everything is possible (in my case, the receiving organisation) is part of the european voluntary service and erasmus+ project. since i’m from estonia, my sending organisation was continuous action. also, this year estonia got to send ten people to participate in this project which is totally awesome!
greetings to former roommate merilin for suggesting for me to take part in this project!
now to the fun part!

2015 - arriving in manchester
so, our plane from tallinn to frankfurt left at six twenty in the morning. i was on the airplane for the first time ever in my life so it was pretty darn exciting for me. the flight to frankfurt, germany was two hours long. what was super awesome about being on the plane was that we got free food, hallelujah.
so, in frankfurt we waited for our flight to manchester for quite a while but it wasn’t as bad, really. the people were super cool in our group, so everything was chill. at 10:55 british time we arrived in manchester! it was so exciting for me since manchester is one of my favorite cities in the world. at the airport we waited for our luggage for almost an hour so that was the least fun.
the first other participants we met were the five italians and of course, the people running the project – bob, joana and godfrey. from the airport we went to drop our bags off at the hotel we were staying at for the night. we had lunch in an outlet supermarket-type building which, again, was something i had never experienced before – the whole floor was only for food stands. then we got some free time so we looked around the manchester area we were in (salford quays).
later on we got dinner at a local pub while a manchester united game was on, so we were watching that (i was watching mainly because we were literally a ten-minute walk away from their home arena!!) and later on we went back to the hotel rooms so we could leave early in the morning for a meeting.
absolutely necessary flight photo / architecture in manchester / our hotel room view! my dinner which was huuuuge / a million ducks and swans / a peek of the football stadium in the back! |

2015 - meeting + going to sledmere
at 9ish in the morning we left off to a meeting for this whole project. it took place in the helly hansen watersports centre. all of us met properly for the first time at this meeting, so there was around thirty five of us from all over europe (and aruba) - estonia, sweden, italy, spain, portugal, england, germany and aruba. in between our meeting we had a coffee break and a lunch break, so yay.
our meeting was quite long so we left to our first destination - sledmere - at three thirty in the afternoon. the drive to sledmere from manchester was three(ish) hours long and everyone was pretty damn tired by the end of it, i know i was. but we made it and in sledmere we met out cook clair and her family! they were the loveliest people ever.
the first thing we did was unload our things from the bus and then we started putting up our tents and our camping gear since this was our home for the following two weeks. this took quite a while since we had really big tents and they took a long time to put up. so, at around nine-ish we were done with this. in between our 'putting up tents' we got dinner and later on we made our little circle of camping chairs. later on i went to sleep at ten pm while everyone else was still awake 'cause i'm the early bird. i suck at socializing.

thursday, 20th of august 2015 - tribfest 'pre'day
i woke up at seven because throughout this trip, for some reason, i couldn't sleep in. at home i am the master of sleeping in, meaning that i wake up at twelve or one. i had breakfast and i tried marmite for the first time and i didn't really like it at all. it made me think why do people think it's tasty. we received our wristbands and t-shirts for the festival, as well as our first payment of thirty pounds, and this was our first day of work there.
today was the day when people would start arriving with all their camping equipment and they would put up their tents and 'move in' for the following three days.
since my shift started at two in the afternoon, i had time to explore the town a bit. a small group of estonians went to see around the town and i absolutely adored this little town! everything looked so cool and we got to talk to some locals as well. we went back for lunch and then my shift at the 'guard the road for the fire trucks so that people wouldn't put their tents on it' camping. reeeaaaally slow four hours of work. the people were super nice to us though! after our shift i received my £5 talon to go hunt for food at the main arena.
we lit a campfire in the middle of our circle of camping chairs and this was honestly one of the times i guess everyone was looking forward to every day. just everyone sitting around, talking, laughing, eating, drinking (*cough*) and singing. kings of leon tribute band was playing but we heard all the main stage bands to our campsite which was convenient. i went to bed early which isn't really a surprise.

friday, 21st of august 2015 - 1st day of tribfest
i woke up at 7am knowing that i had to go to work at 9am instead. yep.
i worked at the vip tent this time. i was literally dragged from one place to another 'cause everyone needed something and i was done with things so quickly that i was needed everywhere else, like bsaically i went to a big vip tent to decorate something in flags and then i went to work as a steward and then i carried stuff from one place to another, so the 4 hours this time went pretty quickly. today was also the day i had migraine. oh, yay. (note the sarcasm). so, seven-ish i went to get food with other people and i had another shift later on. this time i had to work for only forty minutes because it was late and bob wanted is to be safe, so thank you, bob!!!
today our campfire was a lot of fun too because bob played guitar and some of us were singing and people were impressed by my singing while i was like 'meh'. so yeah. that was cool. i went to bed after midnight which was like probably one of the latest nights i went to bed at. woo.
see you in the next post!
x o
